Apologies if this Wakmann is too off topic... But It seems so ridiculous, I have to ask..

I know sometimes hand engravings are ok... But I am really curious here... What engraving could have been so bad that it needs to be scraped off?

Eric, we see that on many watches from the early 1940s (or late 1930s, often hard to tell) - and it isn't a sign of faking, but of "adapting" to the new US import regulations. watches destined for the US market had to be marked w/ the importer's name (and jewel count, adjustment level, origin); so if a watch was either earlier or hadn't been destined for the US market originally we see those marks scratched by hand in the early days, often prior marking removed.

so, as strange as it looks, it is most often "correct"

Thanks Fred

Any guess as to what the original stamping said?? It appears to have ended with an "N"
