Guys. I have another one for. What do y'all ya think? Is this a decent price to pay for this particular chronograph? Your thoughts would be much appreciated! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Breitling-Vinta ... 0143867%26 |

Well the seller has some of the information a little wrong. By the watch back it suggests that its a 1946 model and that its a Ref #178. A movement shot would be good, as it should have a Venus 170 movement fitted. Dial layout looks right for that layout. Text font is similar to one other listed. Try this one; http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/VINTAGE-1946 ... 0936120442 |

movement shot would be nice to see, but no doubt it is a Venus V170. Watch looks correct, but the dial condition makes it a very questionable buy at this price; Jim links to a sale for a perfect specimen which ended at the upper range of reasonable even for a piece in this condition. replacement dials (original, not refinished) for the ref. 178s do come up for sale from time to time, but please note the chrono second hand is damaged too. conclusion: could be restored to nice condition with quite a bit of risk and effort, but you should be able to find a much better example at this price. patience & persistence ! |

The dial script looks pretty bad. Looks like it's been altered to me which would make me suspect of the rest of the watch. I've got this ref 178 in the queue awaiting it's restoration turn and you can see how different the Breitling script is. More precise. |

Thanks Fred and Jim for the great input, as always. I'll hold off on this one. It's a hard thing to do, but I want to find the right one, at the right price for my taste. Like I said before, I don't mind some wear if the price is right, just as long as it's an original chronograph and I'm not getting ripped off. I'll keep posting some options for y'all to look at if you don't mind. Take care and thanks again! |

No problems, JcorsoV. Your right Vintage, the script has definitely seen better days. Both the eBay listings in this thread show exactly the same text font, which must be an unusual event to occur in the space of a few weeks listing and both 1946 versions. Different sellers as well. I am thinking that it might be a legitimate font type and a change without notice alteration on the production line. Perhaps as 1947 loomed, they decided to update the font from 46 onwards. Just a guess though. ![]() Definitely, if a replacement dial could be found, it would more than likely not be in this particular style, which might cause difficulties with authenticity of the restoration later on. So from that point of view, it would be harder(but not impossible) to consider for restoration, unless a refurb of the existing dial were possible. |
