Post subject:  Vintage Navitimer Twin Jet 806 "Unworn" NOS - Good Purchase?

Hi,

I am new to this forum, but I've been collecting watches for many years....albeit mainly Rolex's.

I've been in the market for a vintage Navitimer, and I came across this ad on eBay from a store in Buckhead, Atlanta.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Breitling-Navit ... true&rt=nc

The seller claims the watch is New Old Stock, and has never been previously worn before! It's a Cosmonaute Twin Jet example and it looks to be in beautiful condition! The strap is clearly not original, but it does come with the original box and papers.

What do you all think??? Good purchase?

I actually decided to go forward with the purchase today, and HOPE that I made a good decision.

Based on the reputation of this seller, I think I made a good choice. Also comparing this particular 806 to others on eBay, I think this has to be one of the nicest examples out there.

The seller did not provide me with the production year of the watch.....Is it possible to tell the year of production from the Serial Number?

I am very curious to get some feedback on my purchase.

Thanks everyone....I am happy to be a new member to this forum, and hope to be a contributor in the future once I learn more about these vintage Breitlings.

1967, but it has the wrong dial. This has a Cosmonaut dial and not a Navitimer dial. And when you look at the lume close, it does not look right to my eyes. But regardless, wrong dial!!! I would contact seller ASAP.

What do you mean that it has the wrong dial?

Is it the wrong dial for the Serial Number?

Which is the correct dial for this watch?

What is wrong with the lume?

I am not challenging your assessment, I really appreciate your feedback.

Anyone else care to give their opinion on this watch?

Thanks!

Does this box match a 1967 Navitimer Twin Jet Cosmonaute (the watch that is pictured inside the box)?

I just bought this watch and I am curious to know if the box was the original one for this watch.

Ok, this is real easy. An 806 Navitimer has a 12hr dial.
An 809 Cosmonaut has a 24hr dial.
They are are not correct unless on the proper Model.
The watch you purchased is a model 806 Navitimer, must have a 12hr dial.
If you read your dial, it reads Cosmonaute below Breitling which puts this dial with the model 809 only.

If the dealer is as astute as they claim, you will have no issue.

Wayne

The C scale outer slide rule has a scratch through it as well, which is unlikely to have been there from new. Therefore, the scale has been remounted or ‘fiddle with’ later on. If it’s never been worn and is in NOS condition, then it’s hard to see how that adds up. You expect to see degraded lume, but there are several scratches on the face as well.

Seller needs to explain.

Once again, good eye. Vision just not the same these days.

Wayne,

Thanks for your assessment. I really appreciate this information.

I will speak with the seller first thing on Monday to receive an explanation.

Is it possible that the seller "simply" mis-identified the correct model number of the watch, and called it an 806 instead of an 809?

I realize that's a very bad mistake, but is that a possibility, or is this really an 806 with an 809 dial?

What is the difference between the 806 and 809? Is there a significant difference in value?

Did I completely overpay for this watch?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm definitely a newb when it comes to vintage Breitlings, and I am relying on the feedback from this forum.

Thanks so much guys!

Welcome to the forum, sorry but no better news from my side. Saw that listing and hoped nobody would fall for it.

806 is the Navitimer, a "normal" 12 hour watch.
809 is the Cosmonaute, a 24 hour watch.

This is neither, far from NOS, but a pathetic Frankenwatch, case is a 806, dial is a 809, no way of knowing what the movement is, whether a 12h or 24h version (Craig and Roff might, by just looking at the gears).

Dial and hands are from a GP Cosmonaute and totally wrong for the SS case, produced in 1967.

It might be "never worn" after being assembled from mismatched components, none of them NOS, btw., even the sliderule ring seems a (good) repainting, but wrong for 1967 production.

Worthless as a watch, some value as a donor; even the "original box" is wrong as are several other claims in the listing - and the price would be too high even for a perfect 1967 Navitimer.

File a "not as described" case, you should have no problem to cancel this purchase.

as mentioned in the other thread, definitely not correct for a 1967 Navitimer or Cosmonaute.

Fred, as always the wealth of knowledge. Just a shame someone got duped by this posting.
Sad situation but resolvable.

Can't tell from the photo if it is a 12 or 24 movement, but as already said, completely wrong.

I also moved the question on the box for it out of the box reference thread into this one.

Yep, I thought I spotted the gold hands when I first saw the box pic. Hate to pile on but the box looks like a later Wakmann offering after the original Wakmann was dissolved and another company bought the name. I bought a Wakmann ladies watch a few years ago in an almost identical box. The box and watch were made in China. Although there are a few variations of real Wakmann boxes for Navitimers they usually follow the same theme as this one with the winged logo also on the top of the box.

Guys,

I REALLY appreciate all the feedback you have provided me regarding this purchase.

The watch is clearly misrepresented, and I will seek a full refund of my purchase.

I don't think I'll have any problems getting my money back, but I am rather frustrated and disappointed in Swiss Watch Expo for making false claims on this watch. I hope they didn't do this intentionally, and they are simply uneducated about vintage Navitimers, but I still think it's pretty sh*tty of them to have advertised this watch they way they did. I'll let you guys know if I run into any problems with the refund, or if they challenge any of the things I will be sure to point out to them regarding the accuracy of the watch they sold me.

I am now back on the hunt for a mint condition 1960's Navitimer or Cosmonaute (Navitimer preferred). Stainless steel is also my preference, but I would definitely consider a solid 18K gold one if it was a near perfect example.

If any of you know of a watch out there fitting the description above, PLEASE private message me.

Thanks again so much for steering me away from this Frankenwatch! I am grateful to this community! :lingsrock:
