Hi Folks,

Just wondered what you thought of this?

I quite like it, but have no experience or knowledge of anything pre 1990's.

Cheers,

know the UK listing, so the answer is no, do not like it, caseback shows
a ref. 6590 if I read this correctly, wrong.

Thanks for the quick feedback.

I thought the reference was 6500, but its not too clear from the pics.

Are you saying steer clear as its not what it says it is?

Definitely steer clear, you'll be better off with one that has actually seen the Breitling factory.

So, the seller has been responsive to some email exchanges on this piece, and supplied some information regarding whats written on the back and has also posted a couple of additional pictures.

Does this shed any further light, or is this definitely fake and steer clear? (I still like it  )

Image

Image
The back reads 6500 and the words FOND ACIER INOXYDABLE (Swiss for stainless steel?)

Image
The detail on the inside back reads "Breitling" and a reference number 179 827715 (last digit could be an S)

Last time I ask. Promise

ref. 179 would be correct for a Venus 170 chrono, serial number would put it in 1952,
external number still strange

Good call Fred.

The internals do indeed match a V170 as shown below

that is nit too complicated, the 12&6 subdials make recognizing the V170 by far easiest of all. dislike the bridge markings. strange watch.

I think that it's as real as it was yesterday (i.e. not at all).

If you appreciate the up/down subdial arrangement, you might want to consider the Breitling 178. Here are some examples that sold recently:

Best wishes in your search !

Guys,

Would really appreciate if someone could tell me if this watch is real or fake as I saw a watch like this in Singapore on the exact same model and numbering.

I believe it has made its way here but am not sure if the watch is authentic.

Would appreicate if anyone could offer advice in either direction and explain Y it would be real or a fake.

Many thanks to all for the kind help

As discussed several months ago, the one in this thread is fake. We will need to see pictures of the watch that you saw to comment on that.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply

Watch I saw in Singapore can be seen at this link

http://swx.com.sg/forum/showthread.php? ... -170-1940s

I believe that it is similar to the ebay piece as the seller of this piece shares the same nick as the buyer of the ebay piece

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ca-1950-38mm- ... 7249940001

Thank you for your kind confirmation please

Guitarman,

Both examples have the minutes totalizer subdial at the 6 o'clock position and seconds at the 12 o'clock position. This is reversed - Breitlings have the minutes totalizer at the 12 o'clock position and the seconds subdial at the 6 o'clock. See pics.

On that basis alone, I would stay away.

Other noteworthy items:
1. 6500 is a strange stamping. Not a recognizable Breitling model ref. number. nor serial number.
2. Breitling logo on the dial is a mid 1940's style, but the bridge marking is block lettered - indicative of mid 1950's styling. Could always be a replacement bridge due to a legitimate service, of course. But coupled with other issues, looks suspicious.
