Its just old. Not water damaged I don't think, lets call it Patina. You see this often with watches that are 40 - 50 years old. Depends on what sort of environment the watch has lived in and how well it was made in the first place. Either way, it looks like it has been well used. There are some very clever people around who can restore a face like this and remove the damage. But some might argue that that’s not a good thing to do. They think in terms of:- As much as necessary and as little as possible. Leave the authentisity on such an old watch. Later Jim |

Thanks Jim, I do love yellowed patina and a well used look does add character to a watch. But all the writing on that dial seems to be washed out or smudgy and the dial colour is not uniform. Could be bad pics too I guess making it look so. |

Doesn't look water damaged to me. I think that it will look very different simply with a new crystal. |

the dial on that watch doesnt look too bad , does it ? I would indeed call it patina but you may want to replace the sliderule insert But over the years I have been picking up parts and pieces here and there One of the pieces I have is an all black dial , just waiting for a beyond repair water damaged 806 with a destroyed dial I put it on Ebay once, but decided to pull it as I am sure I will regret it the day its sold and I am sure the minute it sells the following day I am offered an 806 without a dial or something |

I do know the hands from a 178 can't be used interchangeably but didn't know about the dial or siderule, also what about the siderule being interchangeable?. |

dials are movment specific, small "feet" under the dial slip into holes in the movement to fix the dial. roff wil probably know the exact horological terms. |

Then just add a period correct siderule and it will look awesome! yes you could replace the dial , but the dial currently on that watch is what makes it so special ! so by changing the dial you make a very rare watch into something not so rare anymore , and not to mention that you now basically made a frankenwatch  here's a pic of the dial feet |
