With my only strap option on my Sif NART being an orange rubber strap which, nice though it may be, is a bit bold for everyday use.

So I went looking for something black with orange details on and quickly found the Superocean 42's new strap (from the orange LE) to be a good match. It arrived at my AD's today and I think it looks fantastic.

But it's such an awkward material. It smells like leather but feels and looks like rubber.

Does anyone here have any insight on what material it really is?

All I know is its referred to as rubberized leather, I'm not 100% if that makes it waterproof or not. I think it looks cool though, a good match to the SuperOcean.

Rubberized leather usually means a thin layer of rubber is applied to the outside of the strap and sometimes to the underside.

I punched an intermediate hole in mine to improve the fit, and the resulting plug showed me a nice cross-section of the material. It's definitely leather, but with a durable rubber coating top and bottom. I think it would be very nearly waterproof, although I don't think I'd use it as a dive strap or anything like that. But I think for sports, working out, getting the odd dunking etc it'd be fine.

I took a pic of the plug... I'll see if I can find it and post it up.

Cheers

Ross

I have a red one of these on my Superocean 42. I actually emailed Breitling to ask about whether it is waterproof. They said that the strap is not waterproof, as is the case with other leather straps.

I have owned a few of these (white, yellow & red), and can confirm that;

1) they are bulky around the buckle area
2) they come in different lengths & lug widths
3) they are waterproof and can be used for swimming / diving
4) they are genuine leather with a special waterproof coating

If you punched your own hole in it, then it will no longer be waterproof as water will ingress at that point.

Is there an advantage for the core to be leather instead of all rubber, especially if all you see and feel on the outside is rubber?

The coating is very very thin, so whilst the texture is that of rubber, the strap behaves like leather in all other respects. it definitely behaves like a leather strap, not a rubber one.

I guess the appeal is that the strap wont age like leather, and so in theory will always appear new if undamaged. I think it also gives a modern twist to breitlings line of straps. A halfway house between rubber and leather if you like. Great idea.

New to Breitling, but not the watch strap world. Rubberized straps are all over. Shoot, even Steinhart offers one, but surely not as nice as the Breitling.
