Dear Members,

I am trying to regulate/ adjust a couple of pocket watches in order to get them to keep time can anyone confirm what might be blindingly obvious to the more learned here

the arm which has S & F either side of the back of the movement what do the markers represent seconds per marker hours per week !!!!

As ever I am grateful for all advice and comments

Kind regards

Walter

It's not that exact a science. They are merely to give an indication of relative location. Without a timing machine regulation is going to be an exercise in trial and error. Just count yourself lucky that it's a solid balance rather than a split one.

Usually, the major marks are somewhere around one minute per day. As Roff said, it's not an exact science. A lot depends on the width of the regulator, how well the hairspring is centered in the regulator, the actual curve of the hairspring in the regulating range and if the balance is in beat. I've had them regulate over 3/4 the range and then go crazy over the remainder of the range. Good luck. Without a timing machine you will be spending a lot of time on this. Make sure you check it in the same position every time. Otherwise, you'll be chasing your tail with positional errors.
