Well after a few months of looking, I finally found the blue steelfish I've been after thanks to Bruce at watches24seven (who went above and beyond in terms of service I might add!). Aksingh's pics (http://forums.watchuseek.com/f15/my-ste ... 57535.html and http://forums.watchuseek.com/f15/breitl ... 38573.html) really lit the passion for this watch, but frustratingly blue dialed steelfish proved hard to find at reasonable prices!

First impressions? The 'fish is even more beautiful in real life than it is in pictures! The Bakelite box it came in is beautiful as others have mentioned, and opening a box within a box within a box does give it a certain sense of occasion when you first unbox your watch. This is my first bakelite box as my Cosmonaute came in the older blue inner box in the white outer box. Funnily enough despite the Steelfish's weight (which I love!) what struck me first is it's daintiness and delicateness. Definitely not too words I thought I'd use to describe the Steelfish, but it is the exact same thought I had when I opened up my Cosmonaute for the first time... there is something about Breitling's attention to detail and precision work on the dials, bezels and hands that despite the size definitely looks delicate and precise to me. From the perfect dial application and lume to the Flying B logo etc, everything is so precise and delicate it's beautiful.

Of course the SF overcomes that by it's size and weight, and is in no way really a dainty watch! It's just something that strikes me each time I look at a new Breitling.

The second thing you notice of course about the SF is it's stunning dial with concentric circles. The crystal is just plain invisible with the AR coating, so you get the feeling you are looking straight down onto the dial and inner bezel without anything in the way.

The rider tabs have always divided people I know, but I love them on the SF. Functional to protect the crystal on what is really a tool diving watch, and they also just look great!

Couldn't be happier with my new watch, and is perfect for summer at the beach here in Australia. Will try in on a brown leather strap sometime soon and post pics as well.

Beautiful watch. Enjoy the experience with this one. :lingsrock:

Probably the term you are searching for here is; Balance. I think all heavy watches that have been designed well tend to balance themselves in both appearance and on the wrist. It’s amazing how easy it is to wear a larger and heavier style watch without feeling your wrist is going to be pinned to the floor.

If balance has been considered in the design at the concept stage (and although weight can get up there with some models) it’s not a real impediment. It’s what you do with that weight that counts. I have a 190g Mido (with PU strap) and believe me when I report that its beautifully balanced. You forget it’s on your wrist after awhile. I think Breitling pay the same attention to weight detail too.

A leather strap will lighten the SF up a bit, but without diluting the overall effect. Would be good to see a pic of that.

You are right, it is balance. But more so than just in terms of weight. It also has great balance aesthetically in terms of size and toughness, offset by the intricate dial and details.

The Steelfish is a great watch. Why Brietling discontinued it is beyond me.

Cheers.

Probably for the same reason they're marketing their new TOC 38mm to women only...to spite us :-(

Just another example of how far out Brietling has become.

Cheers.
