Beautiful watch. If I didn't just pick up the B01, i'd be all over this.

Just managed to read this long ago review. Nice watch and excellent review...
I am not really that concerned about heritage when assessing a watch as to whether the design follows the tradition. Sometimes changes are necessary to make a watch better for the user. For me when I assess a watch I look out for every single detail on the watch to see if they are necessary or simply just to beautify.

I don't normally like watches that use numbers on hour markers because it "reminds too much of time" and loses that "timeless appeal". However on Navitimer 01 I think it's necessary because it has a busy dial so the numbers help maintain the main focus of the watch. Color choice is perfect and classic. As much as Breitling is famous for their slide rule bezel, I personally feel that this watch appeals more to professionals as laymans like most of us do not really need those functions except just simply to entertain. The "compass look" is unique and overall a "must have" for pilots. However if I could only have one watch it will not be this or any of the Navitimers. Most will prefer an all-rounder watch as their holy grail and unfortunately the killer of this watch is the WR...

This was one of my considerations when I was purchasing my first luxury watch but besides the WR issue, it didn't look good on me so I had to forgo it. Might consider this again in future... After all it is an important model in the Breitling series that projects what they are famous for.

Taste changes over time. I wanted nothing to do with Navis when I first started collecting. It was the heritage and well-maintained DNA in the current models that ultimately changed my view. The Navi occupies a significant place in watchmaking history of the last 50 years and remains one of very, very few models Breitling hasn't totally f###ed up. For instance, I have a couple Chronomats, but doubt I will ever get a current (post Evo) model. But, again, taste is personal.

Gorgeous piece. Though I do like the bracelet, I bet that would look sweet on gold croc.
