Got a call from my AD this afternoon with an invite to attend a Boston Bruins game next Thursday night, in a luxury box, hosted by Breitling and.........WAYNE GRETZKY.

Needless to say, I said yes. Can't wait to meet Wayne and ask him why he's referred to as the "Great One" when Bobby Orr is clearly the greatest hockey player ever. :poke:

Maybe because he holds more records than Bobby and achieved in less time than anyone else around

Interesting to see what he'll tell you though because he's so modest...

Firstly, I'm English so I know jack about ice hockey, so don't shoot me down in flames if this is totally wrong, OK!

Isn't Gretzky's huge goal haul primarily due to his phenomenal shooting rate though as I always believed he actually had a fairly ordinary score per shot rate? I've heard one of his quotes said by quite a few motivational speakers - "You miss 100% of the shots you never take" - so I always assumed he was somthing of a shooting machine......

Not totally wrong D8, especially for your quote.

Gretzky was known to shoot from ANY position, even from those which, statistically, the scoring percentage is nearly zip. Just because of that, the defense let him more space in those circumstances. And, evidently, you don't give Gretzky space.

Another factor, except of course his outstanding skating skills, is that he was much "lighter" than standard NHL measures (only 180 lbs for 6'') which gave him the speed and agility to avoid not only the adverse defense but also the "bad" guys, who, of course, were after him instead of the puck. That is why there was a red alert whenever he was in position of the puck in the adverse blue zone.

To all that, you have to add the exceptional vision he had of the game. About 2/3 of the points he was credited for were assists. The Edmonton years were his best.

Not really shocking since Gretzky played for 21 seasons compared to Orr's 12.

Of those 12 seasons -
-won the Norris trophy (best defenseman) 8 straight years
-won the Art Ross trophy (league scoring title) twice, as a defenseman.
-won the Hart trophy (MVP) 3 straight years.

No other player has ever dominated every aspect of the game of hockey the way Orr did.

You are perfectly correct.

But, most records Gretzky holds, he achieved during his Edmonton years which were 10 seasons. The rest of his career was just a bonus (whether records or money is concerned) and it's true that his 21 seasons helped him better the score in many of them.

Having said that, I do have an immense respect for Bobby Orr. However, IMO, it is wrong to compare players from such different eras where the play and the conditions were totally different. As it is wrong to compare, for ex., Formula 1 champions. Who among Fangio, Senna and Schumacher is best? They come from such different eras.

I was lucky enough to enjoy Breakfast with Wayne, spring of last year @ the 4 Seasons courtesy of Breitling! It was awesome. Michelle Kwan & Ming Sei were also in attendence along with some of my faves from Breitling! Everyone one was so nice, especially Michelle. One of the nicest girls I've ever met!

It's sure to be a great time! Enjoy!
