This was never a problem before, but I just got a new phone and the case I got for it has a very strong magnetic closure. I normally wear my phone on my belt on my left side; I also wear my watch on my left wrist. I'm worried about the effect of the magnetic closure on my watches.

The magent in the case is really strong, almost unnecessarily so. I picked up the phone yesterday and my whole set of keys came with the case. I then put the case down, and slowly moved a metal bar towards the case. At about 1.5" away, the case "jumped" at the metal bar and I was able to pick up the case (with phone inside) by lifting the bar.

Should I be concerned about this? When I sit or stand, my wrist is just about resting on the cellphone case. Or is this amount of magnetism not an issue? Thanks for your input.

Wow that is strong. I recently had the accuracy of my daily Steelfish check at the AD. I had measured it at +6 per day since I bought it, but they measured it at +10 and said that the primary reason was that the watch was slightly magnetized. After they de-magged the case they re-checked it and it was +1!!! I thought that my phone case might have doen it, but I havent changed any habit (still wear the phone on the left and watch as well) and as of today, 9 days later, Im at +1.22 per 24 hours average. So looks good to me.

I dont think my phone case was causing my magnetism, but if your case is that strong, I would say that yours might end up being an issue.

The primary issue with magnets is with the balance spring. Modern balance springs are made of alloys that are less magnetic than previous steel springs, but they are still slightly magnetic. Given that it only take a very slightly magnetised spring to have a fairly dramatic impact on something that moves as frequently as a balance spring so I wouldn't risk it.

YES and YES; magnets are an issue!! Especially the ones on cases like that, money clips and even women's purses and wallets! Keep your mechanical watches away from them (unless you have a :rolex Milgauss or something!)
