Your question is two-fold. One is a question of bidding strategy on sleezebay. That being that most serious bidders will drop VERY late bids to try to get it, like say last few minutes. I rarely bother to bid on something until the last hour, and then I rarely get it for what I am willing to pay. The next is of authenticity. Sorry, the pics are not good enough for me to tell, but the "kings" will likely be able to tell you later today. :lingsrock:

can anyone give me a bit more advice about buying this watch? its starting bid is £650 and bidding runs out in just under two days. you can buy it now for £700. i am happy to buy it now for £700 but i cant work out why the price is still at the starting bid after being on for almost a week. is it not real? other people in the forum have said that it looks like it is. he doesnt seem to have sold anything else so i dont want to go ahead until i feel more certain.

First, it's real. There are no fakes of this particular model so you can rest easy.

Note this is a quartz watch, the Colt Chrono Quartz to give it it's full title. It's described as "self-winding" in the listing but it is not an automatic.

As to why there are no bids, there are a few reasons. As BoneDoc says, most experienced bidders on eBay wait until the last few seconds before bidding. This is called "sniping" and stops bidding wars starting so it's not unusual to see no bids until late in an auction. The fact the seller hasn't a track record buying/selling watches will put some people off. The very poor photos don't help and the description is not exactly from a sales brochure!

However, I think the main reason for the lack of bids is that, IMHO, it's priced on the high side. I would say around £600 to be a fair market price for this piece in the UK so a £650 starting price will not attract bids from people who have been looking for this watch. They will just wait for the next one to come along. I personally waited over 15 months before I got the deal I wanted on a Breitling B-1. However, if you're happy paying the asking price of £700, then that is what the watch is worth.

It's a bit like a game of poker waiting for the other man to blink. If 12 hours before the auction ends there have been no bids, mail the seller offering £600. He might just accept it! You can always pay what he's asking later.

Whatever you do, good luck.

I typed something similar but this post beat me to it and is a very thorough answer.

Also bear in mind that the watch is 5 years old and is going to be in need of a service soon if it hasn't had one - maybe GBP200 or so.

That is why you are one of the "Kings" Shark! You know that stuff by memory, I still have to search through the 'logs and compare pics! Always teaching! Thanks! :D
