Post subject:  Case deterioration

I just gave one of my Breitlings to my new son in law. When I packed it up I noticed the watch pillow had deteriorated. So I looked in the boxes for my other Breitlings and saw the same thing. Anyone know how to stop this from getting worse? (Pictured are the worse cases from my 4 box sets.)

Have your stored it in a damp or humid environment?

It looks like scrap to me.

Agreed, that is quite bizarre - mine are very old, sit in a cupboard, and have remained mint.

I live in Hawaii but the air conditioning runs 24/7.

I saw a watch for sale on here the other day where the picture of the inner travel case was showing the same thing. I was hoping someone had some sort of leather conditioner them would recommend or something similar.

Unfortunately this can (and sometimes does) happen to cases of a certain age, and it's probably due to atmospheric conditions - heat, humidity, etc. TBH Breitling boxes of that era looked nice enough, and I always loved the Bakelite outer, but the internals were made of the 'finest' "pleather", so longevity was never guaranteed. The internal parts of the newer Breitling boxes use real leather so are likely to hold up far better over time (although the cardboard outer is a step backwards IMO). The old red "pleather" Omega boxes suffered the same fate too, although on them it looks even worse as it was the outside of the box that was covered.

At the end of the day, while some manufacturers do a very good job (Patek, the latest Omega boxes, etc), a lot of watch boxes are very much an afterthought by some manufacturers. Just look at Rolex! As a result a lot tend to be very cheaply made with little thought of longevity past the initial presentation.
