Just purchased a preowned super-ocean. I was looking at the date stamp. Says 5006, so I understand this to be 50th week of 2006. This would be mid December. Reading info online, I read that the 2006 model had a square with dot on the second hand and that 2007 they switched to an arrowhead. This has the arrowhead.

Are watches like cars where the model year changes before the actual calendar year?

In other words, is 5006 really a 2007 model?

Here are the other markings

And a pic

Thanks

Date stamp is for the case, not the watch so could have been cased up later. Alternatively, the watch could have been serviced (which should have happened by now) and the newer style hand used as hands are replaced during servicing. Welcome to BreitlingSource.

As Roff says there are other explanations, such as hands change during service, but I'd have thought it almost certain that it's an MY07, yes.

Actually, no.

Models are announced Basel in the spring, or in the weeks leading up to it, after the start of the year, it before it. The Basel that just wrapped up unveiled 2015 models.

OK, but in terms of production, the production of a 2015 watch will typically have commenced in 2014, no?

A watch that was introduced in 2015 will not have been partially produced in 2014. A watch model that was already on sale will have production dates that cross years - remember with testing and adjustments production occurs over several months.

In 2006, I read the watch was called a Super Ocean Steelfish X-plus, and that was for only one year. 2007, it was renamed back to the Super Ocean Steelfish.

So, after reading the replies above in regard to case date, model year etc. if someone asked me what the watch is, or if I went to re-sell it, which name would I call it?

Given that only the name changed it really doesn't matter, but I would call it a Steelfish.
