Probably 2009 as I have almost the same model but agree you can check for the exact date by doing what Rolf suggested

What distinguishes it from any other year? I'm not aware of design updates through the production run.

According to my knowledge different kinds of dial design appeared through the years, also different hand designs, and finally different bezel design (but then renamed as Chrono Galactic or something similar). I think the dial design shown on the scan is the second in time out of three but date code tells more of course.
At the same time I cannot see such date code on the case of my newly purchased Chronomat 41 (B01), I have the Ocean Classic mesh on and thus the interlug area is more or less visible with the bracelet on too... Can anyone tell me if Breitling stopped using these date codes or I have to take the mesh off to see it?

You have always had to remove bracelets to see it.
