Post subject:  Is this "oil" on the crystal normal?
Hello,

My wife's cockpit-lady has had a bluish film on the crystal since we purchased it from the AD. The bluish tinge looks a little bit like oil on water. I've always been hesitant in cleaning it because I do not want to damage the crystal. I tried to wipe it off with lens cleaning cloths but to no avail.

Any ideas what this is? Is this normal? If not, how do I clean it?

That sounds like the anti-reflective coating, which is meant to be there and I believe (although I know nothing about this particular model) is on both sides of the crystal.

Most people on this site seem to like it, but on some other forums there are a lot of people who prefer to have it only on the inside of the crystal.

Correct....... on both counts.

@ rbc3az - water marks on the AR coating can sometimes make it look "patchy" for want of a better word. If I was you I wouldn't use any cleaning fluid on it - just a bit of water and a soft cloth is all you need. (You can probably use lens cleaner on it, but why bother when a bit of water will do the job just fine).

Hi,

Speaking of anti reflective coating on the crystal, I just notice a very small hairline scratch mark on my Chronomat Blackbird. Its not very
obvious but I just hate knowing its there. Can this small mark be polished off? I brought to Breitling Service Centre to see if they could do something about it but they told me its just a very minor sratch on the coating and nothing can be done about it unless I change the entire cyrstal.

So can it be repaired by polishing the surface of the crystal?

No it can't.

There is nothing you can do without replacing the whole coating. In theory I guess you could polish the entire crystal to remove the coating and then have it reapplied, but practically the service centre is correct, it's easier to just replace the whole crystal.

Guess I'll ask the service centre for a quotation to replace the crystal and I know its not going to be cheap.

The exterior coating can easily be removed with polywatch, probably take 20-40minutes! 8)
