I have just realized when manual winding my Avenger Seawolf I started to wind counterclockwise instead of clockwise , will this cause damage to the mainspring ?

Not that I know of. Some people don't release the crown when winding so in effect to wind with fingers on the crown without breaking your hold you have to wind backwards to start another turn.

Winding anti-clockwise won't do any damage at all. All that happens is that the crown will be slipping in the keyless works rather than rotating them (think of a ratchet turning the 'wrong' way) - it's not doing anything to wind the watch, but not doing any harm either.
