I just bought this used---mint condition. What is the opening for on the opposite side of the casing as the winder--left side of casing, and what keeps that little button (plug) in place and the insides waterproof? Mine came out during shipping to me.

It's the access port for the bezel gearing. I think that it's just a push fit but an AD can arrange to get it fixed for you.

Thank you. It pushed right back in perfectly. It's tiny, but it may even have a gasket. The only thing I have to figure out is how it can be waterproof with a vulnerable opening like that.

It's not waterproof. It is rated to 100m of STATIC pressure. Water activities are not static, they are dynamic, increasing the effective pressure as you move through the water. I've had a few GTs and would never swim with one though 100m is considered suitable for swimming.
