Post subject: | Breitling Emergency MIssion: Making Rattling/Winding? Noise |
Hello, I just bought a used Breitling Emergency Mission and from the outside it looks immaculate. I tested it with the tester for the 121 mhz beacon, the pushers, and chronograph all work properly. However, when I shake the watch from side to side there is a rattling noise from the inside. Not very loud and it kind of sounds like when an automatic watch is winding itself when worn or shaken. This watch is not an automatic as far as I know, and I am really hoping I didn't buy a damaged watch here. Any help regarding this greatly appreciated! |

Well shaking the watch from side to side isn't going to do it any good! It's kind of hard to diagnose a noise based on description but it doesn't sound like an issue. There are still moving parts in an analog quartz watch which have tolearnaces and therefore some freedom to move. If the watch operates normally I wouldn't worry. |

Hahaha yes I know shaking it too violently won't be good for it. LOL. I am just trying to make sure it isn't a dud or that it may be heading for an issue in the future. My thought was that perhaps it is something to do with the antenna mechanism? |

Could be the coiled up antenna hitting the inside of the tubular casing. Is the seal on the antenna cap intact? Does it make any difference which direction you shake the watch head i.e. from the 6-12 o'clock(N-S) plane or the 3-9 o'clock (E-W) plane? I have tried mine and I can't hear any appreciable noise. When was the last time yours was serviced? |

Hello Findo, Thanks for posting. The seal is intact and the transmitter tester verified that the beacon is working properly and has never been deployed. I notice the sound more when I shake the watch on the E/W axis (3 o'clock/9 o'clock), whereas the sound is more muted when I shake it on the other N/S axis. The watch was serviced in early 2010 and it still has the free first service attached to it because the service done in 2010 was a warranty issue and they did an overhaul on it as a courtesy. I am going to my AD tomorrow to have them take a look, but I am a little nervous now that you mention you do not have this slight rattle noise. You have to really hold it up to your ear to hear it, and as I said in the post above it sounds more like the noise when you shake an automatic watch and you hear the gears winding. Anyone else have some advice or an Emergency Mission to test this theory that the internal antenna is making the noise? Thanks |

Well, I went to my AD today and had them send the watch in to Breitling USA for it's first free service. Hopefully Breitling will pick up on the slight rattle when they overhaul it and will address the potential issue free of charge. In my experience they are pretty good about doing the right thing. I will update when I get word from Breitling if the noise is normal or if it is something that needs to be addressed. Thanks for all the responses. |

UPDATE: I got the Emergency Mission back from my AD after it was sent into Breitling for service. The rattling noise is gone, and they didn't charge me for anything so I guess something just same loose inside and when they took it apart they just fixed it! Thanks for all your posts and answers! |
