I need some advise/help.....

I have a Superocean Abyss thats 11 months old, i wear it daily and love it. I dont have a watch winder and always wind the watch myself, and always treat it like its my child, i always baby it.

This weekend i picked it up to wind it, and once i felt i wound it about 30 times, i went to push in the post and screwed it counter clockwise until i feel the thread pass to screw it inlike always, i learned that trick on here because i was always scared of stripping the threads.

As i was winding the watch back to feel the thread pass by, it felt like the gears were being grinded or moving which i never experienced before. Then as i screwed the post into the thread it felt like it was grinding, or a gear was engaged, and something and ticking the hole way. I never had this happen before and now i am scared to wind the watch and wonder if i should go back to my AD and have it sent back to Breitling to have it checked, or if i overwound it and this is what happens when you do that.

It still is working and keeps perfect time, and nothing else seems to be affected, im just scared to wind it again thinking i may cause more damage if there is a issue.

I never noticed if it ticked when you wound it in reverse to catch the thread or if it ticked when i am screwing it into the thread? Any advise would be greatly appreciated!!!!!!! :lingsrock:

Well you didn't overwind it because it's an automatic, although I'm not sure why you are manually winding a daily wear automatic.

I'm guessing from your description but it sounds as though there may be a problem with the wat that the crown stem is engaging with the winding mechanism - definitely a Breitling fix.

I wound it because i did not wear it since Friday and it was Sunday. I was working on my house all weekend and never left or put it on, which is rare i do wear it daily otherwise. I dont remember ever hearing or feeling any ticks when i wound the watch in reverse to find the thread or when i was winding it into the thread and that scared me............ Would it hurt to try to wind it to see if it does it again or would you just send it out to be looked at/fixed through the AD?

I would get it checked out, what's the point in potentially making hte problem worse.

I agree, thanks for your advise. I will keep this thread running with my updates and experiences with what happens. I hate to send it out, i just picked up a new black diver and the new leather straps for the Abyss, with the white sides and it looks amazing. I will post some pictures when it gets back to me.

Time to put the Pro 2 back on and send her off as i expected................... :(

Thanks again Roff, your speedy response is much appreciated. I should be able to get to my AD this weekend, i already called them to make them aware of the situation.

I also know you can overwind it, but i thought maybe it made an click or some kind of sign once you wound it to the max and maybe thats what i was experiencing. Since it also happened as i tightened it in the threads i thought i was in trouble, i figured i would bring it up, being hopeful that i am just missing something.

It was a sad first day without my SuperOcean, funny how my movado just doesn't do anything for me now.... Will keep this thread going to share the experience....... Updates as they come....

Well after mailing it to my dealer, he swears that it was just something that can happen once and a while and when he wound it, it wound just like the new ones in the case. It should be back home by Tuesday!!!!!! Not sure I by it but the guy has been awesome to me so ill take his word for now. So a stem can sometimes engage a gear or something else besides the winding mechanism? I swear I did nothing out of the ordinary...

Is this normal? I am new to automatic watches and he claims this can happen time to time and it is normal.....

Well once i get it back, and if it happens again, this time i will not screw the crown in the thread when it happens, and just hop in the car and drive it to the AD and personally show him. When i screwed in the Crown and he unscrewed it, i guess it reset and maybe it did not catch the same way it did for me, it was a one time occurance for me so far. :roll:

If it happens again he is going to be seeing my face and it will not be a happy one after he sent me away the first time. :guns: He also claimed this happens on his Breitling for Bently at times, but mine is just a simple Super Ocean Abyss, not a chronomat or anything fancy, just the date and time. i am assuming the model he has has a few more whistles then mine :?:

Did this ever happen to anyone else with the Crown being pulled out and either catching a gear or grinding something on the backstroke of winding the watch? Please chime in....

This time i was real busy and they are in the next state, so i mailed it this time, now I see thats not the way to go. I will see how it goes and keep the thread posted to my findings.

Once i get it back i will post some pics with the 3 diffrent straps i have for my SuperOcean Abyss, and work on changing your mind about them ROFF....

Isn't there an overwind release (not sure of the tech term). When I wind my CA to full it will make a different sound once it's wound all the way. It will keep winding when I'm screwing down the crown and that sound (when it's fully wound) sounds a lot like the what I read in the first post. Though it's not really a grinding sound, but it is different than the sound of winding the watch when it is not fully loaded.

Just checked, mine definitely ticks when it is fully wound. At least it makes a different sound than the normal winding sound. It's been doing it for 6 years, been serviced once and keeps just about perfect time as my daily.

There is a slip clutch mechanism in automatics that some people have reported hearing. I've never heard it, and can't really think of any real reason for a noise (it's one end of the spring slipping in the mainspring barrel).
