Hi There!

I have a prized Chronometre Aerospace and in August I sent it to have the battery replaced after 4 years. Took 10 days and came back all misconfigured, so I reconfigured it. Now it's flashing again 4 months later and the service agent who repaired it the first time is saying that it's likely the movement is faulty (well known issue according to him) and is drawing too much power from the battery.

It's going to cost $800-1100 to fix apparently and I am understandably not very happy as I thought all these high end watches were reliable and had long warranties.

Anyone able to shed some light please?

Cheers

Andre

I'm assuming that it's an older watch and old quartz is notoriously unreliable and is no longer capable of being repaired - not Brietling's fault, the movement manufacturers have declared them obsolete. I assume that Breitling is proposing an upgrade to a SQ movement which they have committed to supporting for at least 20 years after they stop using them.

It's one of the things that all manufacturers are dealing with in these relatively early quartz movements.

Hi There!

It was purchased 4 years ago? Does that make it old? Does that fall into the category of requiring an upgrade to SQ?

If it was new 4 years ago then it alread has a super quartz movement and I haven't heard of any SQ movements having these issues. What's the model number?

He called it a "Chronometre Aerospace" in the OP, so I'm assuming it is a SQ.

Not necessarily.

1999 / 2000 Aerspaces were COSC certified non SQ movements, and to the best of my knowledge are now non repairable.

Hi Andre,
If you have time see this thread:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35404
Breitling good for 10 years?
Its for the first time I hear someone declare that Breitling has declared the 1999-00 quartz movement in the Aerospace "obsolete"... Never seen that with any major mfg, in any brand... Real Strange.
In short, if your watch has the quartz, you are done for, must upgrade. Good luck. Theo

Ok I am getting lost, are you saying my 2007 Aerospace has a 1999/2000 movement in it and therefore can't be repaired? I am pretty sure that would consistutute misrepresentation of the product and I would have comeback from Breitling because surely you should be able to expect more than 4 years from a many thousand dollar watch purchase. I could understand if this was a $50 Seiko (though I have had cheaper watches last far longer than 4 years!

With respect I disagree.

I would argue that it is indeed Breitlings fault. Who's fault should it be? Mine? My relationship is with Breitling, if they didn't use quality parts and this has resulted in a sub par movement being used, then this should be their responsibility. If they have a beef with the supplier of those parts, this shouldn't affect me, especially in a 4 year period.

No I was trying to establish if it was a 2007 Aerospace. I have seen 10 year old watches sold 'new' - hence why I asked what the model numebr was - to establish what the movement was.

That is for sure SQ.
I would not accept that price for fixing it.
Which country are You from?

:yeahthat

That's a modern SQ movement and not one that is susceptible to the problems of earlier quartz movements. It's also current, so while repairs on quartz pieces are harder, it's easily supported and that cost is not right.

Hi There!

Thanks. That is NZD (New Zealand) and I need to ship it to Australia which is my closest Service Agent. However if I need to ship it to Australia, I may as well ship it to the US (Where it was purchased whilst on Holiday).

Not sure what to do at this point.

Cheers

Andre

Start by getting a breakdown of the costs - they should be able to tell you how they got to $1,100.
