Post subject:  How do reference numbers work?

Hi everyone,
Having been stooging in the background for a while admiring the watches and knowledge here (great site!) I'd like to know more about watch reference numbers.

By sending the link to myself I can see that the Colt Automatic found below is
Selfwinding movement. Steel case. Silver dial. Diver Pro strap, tang-type buckle.
A1738011/G599/132S/A18S.1

http://www.breitling.com/en/index.php#/ ... automatic/

I think that...
A refers to Stainless Steel
17 is the movement
80 is a model number (???)
11 no idea
G599 again, no idea
132S/A18S may be the strap and buckle?
and the .1 means it is an upgrade

Can anyone help with the codes I don't yet understand please?

And can you explain how changing the dial from, say, white to blue would affect the model number.

Thanks everyone

Looking on in envy and thanks in advance

:yeahthat but that only shows half the story, but apart from the "11" in the OP's example which refers to the dial colour (I think!), then I'm unsure as to exactly what the rest means as well! As far as I know it's things like strap or bracelet, colour of leather if it's on a strap, type of clasp, etc.

To be fair though, most of the time you will only see the letter and the first 5 numbers in watch descriptions.

[b]A1738011/G599/132S/A18S.1

What I think from your example:
A : case material
17 : caliber (breitling movement)
3 : COSC certified (0 = no COSC cert.)
80 : model number
11 : bezel/case finish

G : dial color
599 : dial design

132S : bracelet/strap configuration

A18S.1 : no idea

I spent ages trying to puzzle the codes out a couple of years ago. My conclusions are here http://www.breitlingsource.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=12943. Whether they are correct or not is another matter!

Not looked at it since so will need updating (eg I missed F = Titanium & Gold for some reason!).

+1
Except 11
A18S.1 means nothing.
