Is the bezel meant to have any play in it at all, was playing with it looking at the slide rule and since then ( or maybe always) it seems to have about a mm play so it moves a little before the bezel spins. If this makes any sense at all, I can take a small video that might be clearer

It's perfectly normal.

The bezel is geared (unlike the Navitimer) and you need some play to avoid the gears binding.
