Post subject:  Is it bad to wind your watch like this?

I thought that the crown on my Navi World felt a bit 'rough' when winding it lately so I brought it into my AD today to check it out. When I asked the watchsmith to try winding it to see if it felt normal to him he started turning the crown backwards and forwards very quickly (as fast as he could it seemed!) about 20 times.

I have heard that it is bad to turn the crown backwards - is this true? Is it also bad to turn the crown quickly?

Thanks in advance, sorry if this is a noob question!

Kevin

Welcome to the forum!

I've never heard that turning the crown backwards would cause any harm. I wind my watches the same way as your AD did, and so does my AD. And, so far I've never had any problems.

Hi Kevin, welcome, and please never apologize for asking a question, that's what we're here for!

Rest assure, it's OK to wind your watch backwards. It has absolutely no function whatsoever and the clicking you hear is from the winding pinion disconnecting from the sliding pinion (clutch). They are specially designed to do so, so no harm will be done.
It won't hurt to wind your watch fast either, it just saves you some time...
