Can anyone tell me what the third large hand that rests to the left of the top of the hour is and what it does?

If im thinking of the correct hand you are referencing, it is the Orange 24 hour hand, for a second time zone.

Not completely sure though, because its been some years since I have seen one.

There are the to main hands, then the chronograph (I think) hand, and then another hand that rests to the left on top of a color bar. That's the hand I'm wondering about.

Normally, that function is used when sailing in regattas and other sailing competitions. The yachting function allows synchronizing your own chronograph with the race judges' and to monitor with utter precision the last ten minutes prior to the starting gun. The count down is read off by the orange minute-totaliser hand running over the dial's blue and red area.

some specialist yachting watches have coloured circles that change colour as the last 10 mins elapses (omega)
mainly due to the fact that boats manouver around the starting line and if you are slightly over it when the gun goes off, you have to 'go around again' and start cleanly so losing a load of time

nice complication to have in a watch whether you sail or not, bit like my emergency...I don't fly but I like the complication (if you could call the transmitter that!)

Thanks. I see what you are saying. So does that hand move in the last ten seconds? I have an emergency also. Both these watches were left to me. So I'm trying to figure out how they work.

Rather the last ten minutes than the last ten seconds.

Best would of course be to find the manuals. If that's not possible, visit an AD and they can (or at least should) show you how they work. And as doctor diesel said - don't pull out the antenna. There are better ways to spend your money...
