I recently confirmed through an AD that my watch is being magnetized by my laptop. I am looking to buy a cheap demagnetizer. I have found two on Ebay; one is for larger hand tools, and the other one is for watchmaker tools. Could the larger one damage the watch, and is the smaller one large enough to do the trick?

Thanks!

I wouldn't buy either of those. I use a passthrough demagnetizer for my watchmaking, although that's generally only parts. They come up fairly regularly on eBay - this one's a bit fancier than most as it's in a box - http://cgi.ebay.ca/Watchmakers-L-R-Watc ... 23062000ff

These two will sell for more reasonable prices:

I have three demagnetizers: plate type for watches, coil in a box for tweezers & small parts and a larger horizontal coil for larger tools.

The plate type works just fine for mechanical watches.

The problem with the coil type is keeping the work centered in the field. On occasion, it has taken more than one attempt to fully demagnetize screws held in tweezers (also a bit risky as the screw could depart to the far corners of the shop) because of centering and speed of removal from the field. It is somewhat a mixture of art and science.
