Post subject:  In for Service - What Next?
The BSC in Connecticut just received my watch today. It is warranty work so just looking t see how long it may take for them to acknowledge receipt and assess the extent of the work required as well as authorize for repair. Thnx in advance.

Generally takes around a week, but not sure that they will provide a work estimate as it's a warranty issue. They may just get on with the work so likely 4 - 6 weeks.

:yeahthat as far as BUK is concerned too. Warranty work takes precidence over non-warranty stuff, so you can rest assured it will get top priority.

Update: Just called Breitling and they said that they will be doing a complete overhaul on the watch complete with polishing (not that is needed the latter). :lingsrock: They said the problem was the amplitude was low. Roff, sure that will mean something to you :)

In an nutshell......

The balance wheel wasn't rotating as far as it should in each cycle. As a result the watch makes more cycles (increased frequency) and the watch runs fast.

It is a B for B 6.75. Actually my problem was that the watch was slow and finally stopped. I think the inverse was my issue with not enough charge building vs too much.

Wow - that's seriously low amplitude.

Here's my assumed explanation if that's the case.......

The hairspring or balance spring si connected to the balance wheel and helps to control the amplitude of the balance. By controlling the amplitude you adjust the frequency and therefore the rate of the watch. As a general rule the lower the amplitude the higher the frequency.

In your case it sounds as though the amplitude was so low that the hairspring was not being tightened enough. A tightened spring is an energy reserve and the release of that energy is what causes the balance to reverse direction. If the amplitude is too low then there is not enough energy transferred to the hairspring to cause the balance to rotate to the full extent in the other direction and it therefore becomes like swinging a weight at the end of a string - over time the apmlitude gets slower and slower and eventually stops.

Just got my watch back today. They did a full service under warranty. I did notice a tiny ding on the case that wasn't there when I sent it in :wowzers I'll take it as it as I am sure Ill add one or two along the way. Glad to have it back.

I've addressed this before in other threads.

Typically, a watch will run fast if the balance amplitude is low because the time for the balance to complete one cycle is reduced. However, there is a little device called the regulator. It is a narrow channel that makes contact with the hairspring as it winds and unwinds, effectively shortening the spring. This regulator is adjustable over a small range and moving it in one direction or the other changes the length of the hairspring and is what regulates the rate of the balance. When the balance is at rest, the hairspring should be centered in the channel.

If the balance amplitude is too low the hairspring will not expand and contract enough to make contact with the regulator. The spring becomes freesprung. This effectively lengthens it, making the watch run slow.

My real concern is why the balance amplitude was so low. It's almost always related to lack of maintenance, low mainspring power or severe shock that cracks a jewel and/or bends a pivot.
