Hi- Can anyone give me some info on this model? I found one that was purchased in the mid-90's from a reputable jewelry store and the guy that owns it is the original owner. It has a black face, a "bullet" band with gold accents and gold rider tabs. My concern is that it doesn't have the typical Breitling model number on the back with a letter and 5 numbers. Instead, in the center of the back, it has the number 81980 above the Breitling logo and 1490 below the logo. Other than that discrepancy, it sounds legit. I can't find very much info online about this model so I was hoping someone could help. Is it a rare model and worth buying if I can validate it's authenticity? He's asking $1500 for it. Thanks in advance for your help!! John

Welcome aboard.
You say that it has a different case back than this?

Edit: Just noticed that didn't pay full attention on the question.

Hello John,

The ref. number that you mentioned seems OK for a reserve de marche model.
It's probably that the particular watch had been produced before the introduction of the current type of reference numbers (that begin with a letter)?

It's not super-rare, but it's not too common either. So if you decide to buy it, I suggest you buy it because you like it, not because someone told you that it's rare.
I'm not an appraising expert, but I think the price you mentioned is a fair price, if the watch is in good condition, and comes on a rouleaux bracelet.

Just to confirm the 81980 ref is correct for an early Reserve du Marche, here's a link to an auction for one.

I would say the asking price of $1500 is at the top end of price range but if you like it, go for it. They don't come up that often.

Thanks everyone for your input and links. I looked at the watch in person today and it is in fair condition. The biggest problem is that the bezel turns in both directions and the watch has a lot of wear. My guess is that it will need to go back to Breitling for service which will probably add $500 (?) to the cost of the watch. Not sure what I'll do but I appreciate all of your help! Regard, John
