Post subject:  second hand runs fine, but...

so i've just noticed today that I reset my watch to the correct time this morning gave it a good winding and when i looked at 3:30 pm the second hand was still running normally but the GMT, Hour, and minute hand hadn't moved since 2:30? does anyone have any ideas. i reset the time again and now it seems to be running fine. this is the second time in about 2 weeks that i've noticed this same peculiar activity.

Thanx in advance,

Ross

Very strange. Sounds like it's time for a trip to the AD.

It's physically impossible for the running seconds hand to be running without the hour and minute wheel turning. Therefore if the hands aren't moving they have to have become detached from the staffs, definitely something that needs an AD trip.

If the balance moves, the seconds bit will move. It is directly coupled off the escape wheel. However, I think the 2893 has an offset cannon pinion. If so, the hands might not move if the tension on the cannon pinion is too loose. My armchair opinion without consulting any documentation. Too late in the evening and the wine is too good to do more research!

If the second hand is being powered through the escape wheel rather than from the mainspring then it will only run for a few seconds though rather than continuous (right???)

Never thought of the cannon pinion - damn I'm still a rookie :?

Well after i noticed it yesterday afternoon, i reset the time and it ran fine the rest of the day and all night, straight through now. Next time I notice this happening i'll get some video of it... probably won't be the best as it'll be from an iphone, but should be good enough to show.

thanx again
