 Post subject: Tax and Duty in Europe

Hi just got a Breitling from USA,great service in 3 days but small point I,ve never had a problem before but delivery people now want €270 when its delivered [I am in France btw]is this duty or tax or what if anyone knows,thanks for any help in advance :lingsrock:

Don't know specifically for France, but generally it's a combination of:

1) Local sales tax
2) Import duty (at whatever rate watches are taxed at in France)
3) Handling fee by the courier
4) Sales tax on the handling fee

Imports from outside the EU in to the UK typically attract 4% of the value and then Value Added Tax at 15% (where the hell did the word value come from, hardly bloody value is it!).

When the US $ is low against the GBP it can mean some real bargains from the states for us, especially when it was just on or over $2 to the £1 !!

Also, just for general info, I was informed on another board that if I was to trade a watch with someone outside the EU (no money exchanged) I would get taxed on the value of the watch imported. No matter that I'd exported goods of the same value.
