Well, if you are doing a paper then you may want to learn how to spell Breitling :poke:

Originally I became attracted to Breitling after becoming familiar with the classic 806 and because of their connection with clocks in allied aircraft during WWII - my father was a navigator in a Lancaster and would undoubtedly have used Breitling instrumentation.

In terms of why the attraction turned into more of an obsession, I just found a lot of pieces that appealed to me - modern and vintage, although the direction in recent years has been less to my taste.

I had my heart set on a Rolex, as a sign of moderate success, but while just browsing eBay under luxury men's watches I stumbled upon Breitling. Like most non watch people, I didnt know of other luxury brands so I had not even known about the brand. After looking over the thousands of Breitlings available, on eBay, I decided to do some research and found BreitlingSource. Although pretty new to the forum world (when I joined), this place helped increase my knowledge of everything Breitling and even other brands. After several trips to an authorized dealer, who carried other brands as well, I knew that I had to have a Breitling. I belive that the build quality is just under Rolex and offers a better value, as well.

Of course finding this place was the best thing for a Breitling lover and the WORSE thing for the wallet. "Should I get this Breilting" comments are followed by a dozen YES responses!! The fact that we enjoy a pretty civil and friendly forum, with SOME very knowledgeable members, doent help feed the obsession!

I stumbled blindly upon Breitling while browsing through a jewelry store. I was just killing time when I saw this incredibly large beautifull watch. I asked to try it on. I remember my wrist shaking as I knew one day I had to have one. I asked the saleswoman what watch that was. She said a supervenger? What was that? When I got home i did some searching on the net and eventually found this forum. The rest as they say is ( ok I'll spare you the cliches). What was once a desire to own a "nice big watch" has evolved to my appreciation of the design and history of Breitling and watchmaking as a whole.

As an aviation nut, it was the adverts for Breitling in the programmes at airshows back in the 70s/80s which got me wanting to own one.

As you may now know, I have the incurable aviation virus since the early '80s and Breitlings were all over the place during airshows or meetings, in the air or on the ground. And they still are today. So, I guess buying a Breitling was a natural choice for me.

Although I initially wanted a Navitimer, I fell in love with the B01 when my AD showed me one. So, even though they are two quite different watches, I fell for the B01.

I grew up with Breitling and the Cosmonaute. My father and uncle, both have a cosmonaute from 72 so as I was a child I always where impressed by the 24h dial. Now a few year later, my brother wears the Cosmonaute from my uncle, my father still his and I bought the Cosmonaute Serie Speciale. That is how I came to Breitling in the early years and now I´m a fanatic ;-)

I bought the Cosmo because I'm a pilot and I use it when flying. Unfortunately for my wallet, I'm now infected with the Ling virus. The only treament is to perriodically by another one. Since I'm also a watchmaker, owning a watch I have to send off for service has a certain element of angst.

I have always been interested in aviation - maybe due to my father being a Navy pilot and then going on to work with the space program, specifically Apollo missions.

When I trained for my private pilot's license I had to learn to use the circular slide rule for all my flight calculations, etc. (the old days). When I discovered the aviation themed Breitlings with their bezel designs I was immediately hooked. After researching their history and learning more about swiss mechanical watches in general I became a B owner. I am still hoping to buy the "right" Navitimer.

For me it was simply a teenage dream ariving out ladish debate (along with other testoserone vices that may have been going on at that time!!!)

I had to be in one camp or another and I'm sure the pychiatrist or socialogist could reveal much from my choices

It had to be a Breitling not a Rolex.
It had to be Canon not a Nikon
It had to be Intel not AMD (well at least at the moment that is)
It has to be Panasonic for TVs not Sharp or any of the others...
It has to be hotels of a decent standard as opposed to camper van in a layby.
Cough....
It has to be Helen Mirren as opposed to Katie Price

etc etc

My dad was in the RAF man and boy, (1936-1976) so I have always been an aviation nut. Breitling watches are the obvious ones to have.

Years ago, i found that on average, every time i passed a jewellers, the most amount of watches that stood out as better looking, were Breitlings.

The watch that stood out the most of the breitlings was the two-tone Chronomat Evo with blue face....and i'm now awaiting the older version of this watch. Hoo-ray!

To this day, i still find only the odd watch amongst other makes that tickles my fancy, yet every Breitling can catch my eye. Dunno what it is that makes them so special to me, but i don't care what it is either.

Oh BroncoSport we are cut of the same cloth. I thought those who spent several tousands on a watch insane, but stumbled across a video analysis of a fake Steelfish. I became interested in such a fine fake and researched it ultimately buying the fake in blue and white dials.

Then that same video led me to this website and I learned how amazing the true Breitlings are, the different models, but mostly I SAW PICS here. My first trip to an AD changed my mind about the sanity of luxury watch owners.

Many Breitlings later I am delighted. I also like that everyone in the world doesn't know what you are wearing from across the room. IMHO the main purpose of that silly date cyclops on the Rolex is to serve as a becon to all within 100ft - "Look at me - it's a Rolex!" Please note the last comment was prefaced by "my opinion." Of course opinions are like as$h*$%s, everyone has one.

On the other hand the Breitlings may be obvious to Breitling owners and "want to owners", but speak more of excellance in quality. I've never received a "wow that's a nice Breitling." I do get, "nice watch. what is that?" Still self-seeking of me I suppose, but of a different degree than if a massive, date mag crystal swallowing a watch was on my arm.

Be prepared for a long obsession with Breitling...........i discovered that this was going to be my aim in life re owning a watch.........that was 50 years ago......when i was driving my taxi in Leeds i found this rather strange looking (at that time) watch.......the in thing in those days was a watch as thin as you could get to be of any use............then finding this rather large thick brick of a watch which did not light any fires at that time until i returned it to the lost property office and was given the lowdown on Breitling being a rather valuable watch to own. The owner of the watch did turn up within the alloted time before i could claim it............he gave me the lowdown on all things Breitling..........thats when the infatuation started......it lasted 50 years before i could buy a new Breitling...........this was in the last day in December in 2009.
The new Breitling Super Avenger 563.........Blue Dial, with Silver Subs and a pro II bracelet............appeared what a day that turned out to be..............so be prepared,it will eventually will happen if you really want it, nothing else will do.
