I notice on all the leather staps by Breitling, they have a code on, for instance, mine is 428X - what does this mean and why are they all different? Anyone?? Just curious as obviously the 20/18 is the lug and I presume the 18 is the clasp end size? Yes?
Please someone educate me!

20 / 18 means 20mm at the lug 18mm at the clasp. The code is for the combo of colour and type of leather.

Thanks for that and you seem to be the guy in the know, is there a list that depicts all the strap codes available? On another note where can I get a manual or instruction booklet for an early chronomat 48 model?
many thanks Dave

There's an incomplete list on this site, but other than that only in dealer books.

You can try asking an AD for the manual, but may have to try eBay.
