I went to change the time on my sa for daylight savings time and noticed my watch had stopped. Strange since I wore it the day before. I gave it almost 40 turns, placed the time somewhere around six so I wouldn't cause a problem with date changing mechanisms and in the process turning got harder and harder till it became almost impossible. I was unable to pull or push in the crown and then it freed up. when I tried to seal the crown it was moving easier and then tightened up til I couldn't go back or forth... I know its not cross threaded and soon while using chronograph the watch stopped again. I unscrewed the crown with ease and went to adjust time and presto binded up again. I wish I had a descent ad close so I could just take a ride and show him. I am one unlucky person when it comes to material possesions. I have barely been able to enjoy it and there it goes and breaks. does anyone have some thoughts? :(

Yeah I do - are you sure you want to hear............

The purpose of the crown is to control the keyless works - collective name for the winding and setting mechanisms. These are engaged / disengaged via the crown stem - wheels / cogs that the crown stem passes through and a spring loaded clutch that engages with a cog.

Marty (onewatchnut) is far more qualified than I am to diagnose specifically what the problem is, but my guess is that the clutch is no longer properly seated and is causing it to jam.

It's not something that will get better, and it's not something that you want to mess with - the watch needs service attention.

Don't be sorry. I really do appreciate you sharing your knowledge and time. I hope I didn't come across the wrong way. I just seem to have bad luck. Problems with both watches less than 2 months apart. Its driving me nuts. Forget the money just the hassle. The first thing the dealer mentioned is setting the time between 8 and 3 which from the instructionsand various threads here I know I didn't do. this puppy stopped and jammed on its own. It didn't stop mid date change. In fact date and most operations seen fine. Chronograph seemed to skip a little from begining so I assumed it was just the movement after reading another thread. A little embarrassing for the price tag but I really do love the watch. I'm so torn. I don't want to deal with local as but of I pay and ship it to someone else I won't be able to show and talk about my issue. Just frustrated and confused.... What would you Guys do?

If you aren't comfortable dealing with the local guy then contact BUSA in CT and see if you can get a specific name to send the watch to. Then you can talk to them directly about the specific problem.

The 8pm / 3am thing doesn't make sense - the jammed crown means that it has to be in the keyless works, not the running train.

Thanks I apreciate it. With your vast knowledge and love of watch movements did you ever think of becoming an ad? Not to sound nuts, but I have read some of your articles and advice to others. That's what made me ask... Thanks again you made me feel better I was starting to think I did something and would be blamed. I actually stripped the thread on my 6.75 a little and I knew I did it and therefore sent it for service, but the ad didn't see any issue and sent it back. The problem is I know the way it was before I did that and sent it. Well it came back scratched up and with the same issue leaving me with a bad taste. the ad said he would polish out the scratches, but at almost 200 us I didn't take him up on the offer. Shipping is expensive when insurance is for high value. Oh well enough about my issues thanks for advice again.

If the watch will not run, the problem is somewhere in the motion works that drive the hands. Now, the keyless works could be the root cause. It really matters not since the dial has to come off to analyze the damage. Speculating on the cause of the problem will not fix it. Without a doubt, it is off to a repair center. It is something a competent watchmaker at the local AD should be able to handle, but he will probably have to order the damaged parts. As Roff suggests, you might be able to get BUSA to recommend someone. Do not attempt to wind or set it. Although the damage has already been done, repeated attempts could make it worse. Unfortunately, things mechanical sometimes fail and it can be very frustrating. :x Screws come loose, parts break, etc., and you will probably never know what happened to cause the failure. :(

Thanks you guys are great I'm just going to have to send it in. I will post when I know something on actual damage

Sort of.

The problem in Canada is that the distributor owns the largest retail distribution network which makes it very difficult. It is also very hard to make money as just a watch retailer, you need jewellery as well with their better margins and I know nothing of that industry.

Still looking at a few options to make watches a business, but don't think anything will happen soon.
