This guy is not too far from me so I can probably arrange an in person visit, but wanted some experts' thoughts first. Watch generally looks real to me, although maybe in need of some work. However I have no idea about the originality of the movement.

The movement isn't a Venus 170 like he says. A Venus 170 has it's small registers at 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock, not 3 and 9. The movement appears to be a Venus 188 of which I have a few to compare it with. The 188 is usally stamped as such by Breitling on the bridge. The rest of the watch looks ok however I would be interested in seeing a pic of the inside of the back cover. It could have a serial number there which would explain a lot.

I don't think there were any replicas produced in the 1940's.

Brian, not worried about a replica, more a frankenwatch - non original movement.

I heard back from the guy - quick reply, but not that helpful - the only number he has is the model number - 242 and he can't give me a photo of the inside of the back of the case because apparently the watch is in Spain, not Ontario as stated.

With a low rating, half of which is as a buyer I think I'm going to walk away from this.

Replicas no but fakes certainly. I've seen so much stuff on Ebay lately that is either an outright fake like this one;

http://cgi.ebay.com/Breitling-Moonphase-Full-Calendar-Valjoux-Watch_W0QQitemZ140172067164QQihZ004QQcategoryZ31387QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

or a conglomoration of parts from different watches. Lately I'm seeing genuine Breitling movements in altered cases with altered dials. You have to be careful out there!

I agree, leave this one behind. I'm not 100% convinced the dial matches the watch either. For that much money you need to be 100% sure.

Wow, Paul - that Ebay link shows a watch that's probably the worst I've seen in a while. The logo on the caseback is the new Breitling winged logo from the last few years! And the markings on the dial are horrible.
