Post subject:  Top Time 810 Question

I’ve been looking at 810’s lately and have a couple of questions that I’m hoping folks here might be able to help with.

Did the mark 1’s with the panda dial all have an orange/red second hand?

Did the mark 2’s all have an 18mm lug width?

Thanks!!

No. You can find orange or silver sweep hands on mk 1 or 2. I’m not aware of any rule on when and where.

No. I don’t think any top time 810s have a 18mm lug.I don’t have any of mine at home but my recollection is they are all the same and they are 21mm? Happy to be corrected though .

Dave, I've mostly seen orange sweeps on Mk2, especially on the latest cases from 1972; some also on earlier cases probably assembled in the early 1970s.
Mk1 are ca. 21mm, Mk2 have 19mm lugs.

I’m sure you’re quite right. Scrolling through photos, looks like I’ve had 4 810s with red second hands, 3 are mk2 and only 1 is mk1.

Thank you both for the feedback. In that case, the search continues.

Do not believe red hand correct on any Mk1.

They’re certainly a few around. Whether they left the factory like that, who knows. It’s quite right to say the vast majority are mk2. Top link is H odinkee, which gets edited out I guess!

The last two you posted are interesting. They're both mk1's, correct? I thought I had read per the article below that the panda dial wasn't introduced until the mk2. Maybe I'm missing something? Or maybe there was a transition period? I haven't been digging into top times that long so still trying to learn.

Post subject:  Re: Top Time 810 Question

there is a widely documented transition for the reverse panda Mk2 dial in Mk1 cases, defined as Mk1.2 (all in later "non-monocoque Mk1 cases by Piqurez)

and there there are some weird combinations like https://omegaforums.net/threads/breitli ... da.137210/ - a Mk1 case (manufactured 1964 and 1965), a Mk2 dial from 1967 and a orange sweep, ca. 1970 ....
massive doubts these left the factory in that configuration.

Thanks Fred. I noticed the portion re: mk1.2 in the Fratello article (that i believe you contributed to? it was very informative btw.). If I'm hearing you correctly then, 1.2's were reverse panda only and we're not aware of any panda dials leaving the factory in mk1 cases?

if we were Rolex collectors, we'd pay extra for the weird ones!

not if they are service parts or frankenwatches (high probability they are)

precisely. especially not w/ orange sweeps, I think.

we have the absurdest transitions w/ Breitling, sometimes more than a decade (the last steel 769 batch is an example, produced in 1947 they were used up until the late 1950s ) between case production and watch assembly - but only on models when over-optimistic production quantities are met by drastically falling demand, not when a model is in stable or growing demand and we have multiple case production batches annually, like with the 810. here we have multiple batches per year until 1969 (with a very large 1969 batch), then one last batch in 1972.
