Post subject:  The Superocean 1004 and the Gruen Ocean Chief and Marvin Div

Hi all,
I’ve seen much written about how the Superocean 1004 uses the same case and bezel (although with a different insert) as the Gruen Ocean Chief and a Marvin Diver of the same era. I am wondering — is this actually accurate, or is it just an assumption based on the similar looks? I’ve included images I’ve found online of all three. I’m hoping an expert can weigh in and set the record straight. ImageImageImage

Oddly enough, the image you posted of the Breitling one doesn’t look like it’s in the right case. The 1004 has that distinctive twisted lug design, like you see in the early Omega Seamaster 300 ( like 165.024)

agree. the Breitling preceded the others by several years (1962 for the Gruen & Rado iirc, unsure abt. the Marvin)

Got it. Here’s another pic lineup, hopefully with the correct case for the 1004 now. A question: Just because the Breitling preceded the others doesn’t rule out that they all used the same case, right? This prompts other queries: Did Breitling produce the case in-house? If so, did the company make their wares available to outside firms like Gruen and Marvin? Or: Did a third-party casemaker fabricate it?

The way I see it, it could simply be that collectors and dealers with the Gruen and Marvin models in their inventory are trying to draft off the allure of the 1004 by saying their models share components with it. While they all look to have a similar design, that may or may not be the case. (No pun intended!)
