Vintage guys,

I have a small mystery on my hands. What I haven't mentioned yet is that I actually bid and won a watch at the Bonhams auction yesterday.

Lot 266...

http://www.bonhams.com/cgi-bin/public.s ... ectionNo=1

The reason I got it is because it looked cool and familiar..it's only just now that I realised it's because it looks like what I read to be a Breitling Chronomat ref. 769 (I guess once a Ling fan, always a Ling fan).

Anybody know what this is? Is the ref. 769 known to anyone here? Is there a reason why Tavannes-Cyma would have had exactly the same?

Clearly a Chronomat 'tribute' - even has the Chronomat patent number, but I am completely unaware of any connection between Tavannes and Breitling.

I don't think that there was any 'Wakmann like' connection, so can't really help on the similarity. I have to assume that at the least Breitling licensed the patent to tavannes, because why else would it appear on the dial?

It's very strange - the caseback is even stamped with "769".

As I am incapable of opening a snap back without scratching it, I don't know what the movement looks like.

It looks perfectly fine to me - this really is a mystery. If it had Breitling on it I would have said it was fine as well - clearly there is some association here, but I have no idea what it is.

A BIG WOW! I have and have had a lot of Tavannes/Venus parts and dials but I have never seen anything like this. A real rare one for sure. The dial signature is correct and so is the chrono bridge signature. What a find! Craig
FYI - Venus cal 175 to be correct.

Wow. thanks. Now I feel smug.. :)

I have just written to a Chronomat historian on an "alternative" forum to see if he knows what this was about.
