I received this picture today from a gentleman, he told me that his mother gave it to him, and that did belong to his grandfather.

It has definitely lived a life. It's from 1958, and I am of course aware of all the "wrong" things, but what triggers me, is that the dial has all the vintage signs that such an old watch should have.

The numbers is to the best of my knowledge definitely Radium, and with a lot of patina. The writing on the dial looks very authentic, as do the AOPA wing, so I am a little curious as to if the dial originally left Breitling production like this.

if it hadn't all those wrong parts I'd have an easier time believing it was a true proto dial - no reason to assume Breitling did NOT have prototypes that never made it into mass production.

but did it leave the factory without a bezel insert to fit that dial ? probably not. did it leave the factory with blatantly incorrect hands ? probably not.

so too much is fishy here - clearly not a recent fake, so not surprised about the Radium.

Maybe it's missing, and maybe it's still there, and have just been painted black.

If you look at the area at 1 ´clock, then it looks like there's a part that is liftet, what could that possible be other that a sliderulering.

Otherwise I obviously agree with you.

btw, seems the dial lacks the proper feet and is SCREWED on ????

there might be a black painted bezel ring, yes. Does that look like it has been designed by Breitling to fit the dial ?
assume to neither of us.

reason for edit: had an unexpexted echo in my original post.

I'm perfectly in line with all your observations, and I would never in any way praise it, what triggers me, is as mentioned - the dial, and just to be sure, I wouldn't praise that either, it just odd in a non odd way.

Check out the fonts and how close/exact they are to that of an authentic dial.

Can anyone find a tachymeter from another Breitling (or wakmann pilot, perhaps) which is base 1000 and skips to 700? I couldn't find one, couldn't match the font either, but didn't have much time.

Tachy seems very questionable but parts of this dial are so accurate has to make you wonder

Bonjour,

I am Stéphan the owner of the watch. Thank you Kurt for the post and to help me trying understand its "story" and past.
As Kurt was mentioning this watch belonged to my grandfather and I have always known him wearing it. I have asked my mom to find pictures so I can try to see if it has always been like this.

I am 51 and I am sure when I was 7 he already has it.

As far as I recall it was always with the black ring.

I am very knew to the "watch area" but for the last 2 weeks I keep reading and documenting myself as I am very curious. I have noticed all the wrong things but at the same time we open it and the movement is a real Venus 178 in very good shape.

The tachymeter on the dial is the strangest thing to me ?? The other things looks like an attempt of restoring a broken watch.

More than happy to answer questions if any.
