Post subject:  Venus 178 chronograph bridge markings
Hi gents,

I searched this forum up and down for an answer to this question, but wondering how to date Venus 178 movements, particularly in Navitimers.

I have noticed later movements seem to be labeled only "breitling watch ltd" on the chrono bridge and the earlier versions include "seventeen 17 jewels unadjusted swiss" on the chrono bridge in addition to the breitling engravings. Is there a way to date the movement based on this?

Attached is a Venus 178, serial and dial are from around 1963 or 64, but it lacks the "seventeen jewels" inscription on the chrono bridge.

I know the components appear silver in the photo, but it's actually the lighting.

it does not lack the "17 jewels ...", right next to the bridge.
are bridge and balance cock gilded ?

Thanks for the reply Fred. Yup, both gilded. Hard to tell in this photo. I was asking specifically about the bridge. Perhaps my observation was incorrect, but was there a time when they started engraving it next to the bridge instead of on it?

There are many different movement markers , i had it in a spreadsheet , let me see if i can find it and i'll post

Here is a document with all data I collected while doing my bead count exercise and some other investigations

On the 'pictures' tab it has pics of the different bridge markings I encountered and the different position of the '17 jewel' marking location , on the Venus 178 tab you can correlate between serial , markings, importer , shock protect etc etc

About the spreadsheet, Rene. Was the info on the shock protection system inconclusive? I "studied" different types of shock protection systems so if you have them in your collection, I might be able to help.

Hi Melvin

I included the different kind of shock protections in the spreadsheet as there were discussions about when exactly (from which date) the inca block was used at breitling and specifically on the 806 with v178 as it was part of the '1953' discussion . I however never did anything with that data as i felt the bead count was sufficiantly conclusive

Ok I thought maybe Breitling used different kinds of shock protection systems in their movements and they had yet to be identified. Never mind then ;) Looks like you have everything under control.
