Both have a pillar wheel chronograph, both have been encased in Navitimer .
V72 derivated from V23, has been declined in many versions and used by many brands .
Venus 178 , an evolution of Venus 175 , has been less extensively used and only by few brands.

Valjoux 72 for me mainly because many brands of that era used them including Rolex, which used them on their triple dates and Daytonas. But the V178 is a classic movement too.

I have worked on 100s of both of them. They both have some shortcomings but I would have to choose the R72 as the best one based on the hour counter design. It is less problematic than the one in the V178.
