As the topic states, why is this already up to 1800 gbp , 2170 euro , 2950 USD ?

Afaik nothing special about the 1964 AOPA 809 ? And this one is in bad condition as well

So why these prices with 5 days to go ?

I'm no vintage expert but 25 bids with 5 days to go on a rough looking piece doesn't make much sense, someone really wants it and maybe the watch has someone else bidding on it to see how high this person is willing to go It is EBay and not unheard for the seller or friend to keep the price going up if someone is bidding on it so early. as we know with auctions some people get into the mode of I want it at all cost and over pay, but it seems to be happening way to early in the the auction...

I've had a few bids on pieces on ebay in the past month and a couple of.times this has happened to me- what the ploy seems to be is that you are outbid continuously and then the legitimate bidder is told that they have a second chance bid if they want it. This occurs very quickly after the watch is sold which has made me very suspicious that it's actually the vendor artificially inflating the price.

u are not missing anything as far as I can see, but if somebody is looking for a really good 809 at a decent price (hell, a reasonable price even) he's out of luck - on ebay and on c24, that's what is probably driving auction price up for this one, though it's really not too nice.

It's not me, I swear. I already ran this one by Fred a few days ago.

It maybe over priced, no doubt. Trevor points out some probable possibilities on why so many bids so early, which I think are spot on.

I also think that 'To tap the mat', so to speak, you often see a number of genuine bidders wanting to test the reserve of others much earlier in the bidding process, rather than later. They crank up their offer in small amounts to try and 'out' others with higher automatic bids. If it all get too hot for them, they disappear having exposed the higher reserves for everyone else to see. I guess it saves them time in knowing now, rather than later, what the final price might get up to. I see this very often as it tends to cut out the sniper bidders at the end of the auction.

So 25 bids early on is, more or less, some bidders trawling for a price check on their competitors. The Seller wins in this situation, which if you are a buyer is the only down side of this type of behaviour.

This watch comes from a town very close to another seller known to some here. This sellers watches have an eerie familiar look to that sellers watches as well. Could be me.......

It may be a function of how often decent shape pieces become available. I know I would eventually like to have an 809, but I haven't seen many in good shape. When the time comes I'm hoping that a WTB here will lead me to one. I'm sure some of you have multiples

If you have a mind to, check out an O & W aviator in the 809 style. Mine came with a 7736/24 movement & has been a real peach. Beautifully made & in an original 809 case. Reasonably priced too.

The issue is where does one look for these rarer and better condition pieces? I'm really starting to think eBay is not the place. Browsing through the forum makes it seem like just about every one is a fake or has been touched up.

Like anything else there is a ton of garbage for a gram of gold, patience is required - many of us have been looking for a 'dream' piece for many years. eBay is always going to be the biggest market, but don't overlook local stores either.
