Post subject:  sapphire or plastic/acrylic?

Hi all and happy new year.
I'm new here and have a question you, hopefully, can answer.
I sold my Breitling chrono-matic chronograph circa 1969, Cal. cx? 11 mvt. I had advertised that the watch has a sapphire crystal as I read on Breitling's web site that ALL Breitling watches have sapphire crystals.
The crystal on my watch had a minor scratch and several micro scratches. The buyer complains that this watch has a plastic crystal. His watchman could repair the crystal and said that it is plastic. I found your forum and under "Crystals" it is written that Vintage Breitlings have plastic crystals.
Ever since I found the minor scratch I wondered why a sapphire crystal could have the scratch as I always treat my things carefully.
I am really confused now and your answer is very much appreciated.

Hi Sammy and welcome here,

I do not know any vintage Breitling fitted with a sapphire crystal. All the domed crystals are acrylic , and probably some very old models can have a mineral glass crystal . Flat crystals often are in mineral glass , but flat crystals are not common on vintage Breitlings . A vintage Breitling has been issued until 1979 .

All current Breitling models have a sapphire crystal ... but consider that Breitling SA has nothing common but the name , with the previous L. Breitling company which disappeared in 1979. They refer to the historical company mainly because speaking about its "roots" is good for marketing .

Thanks saabrite.
Your answer was very helpful.
This Breitling has nothing to do with Breitling SA and it has a domed crystal.
Will read up on SA.
