I'm considering the purchase of a circa '60's Super Ocean, and wonder if anyone can provide a link (or links) to a good on-line source of information. Alternatively, if there are any experts on the forum who would be willing to post (or pm), I'd be grateful.

The watch I am considering is not the chrono version.

Not much online, and not sure what you are looking for, but here is what little I know.

The case was a completely new design to try and be as waterproof as possible so the movement was inserted from the front to avoid potential problems with a leaky caseback. The crystal was reinforced to take the pressures (thickness and curvature). Other than that it's a 'normal' Breitling of the period.

The only reference number that I can find for the non chrono version (which doesn't mean that there aren't more) is model 807A.

Value on these is tough, they have been increasing recently due to the popularity of the SOH, but I would say $500 - $750.

Thanks for the insights. Oh, and if you can find one in very good (or better) original condition for that kind of money, I'd recommend buying it immediately! My understanding is that they are exceedingly rare, and I'd be very surprised to see one in excellent (or better) original condition available for less than $3k.

Well Richter's guide price from last year was $450 - $500. I think that's low given the popularity of the SOH which has translated into a lift for the originals.

You don't see many of them, but $3K is more than the chrono versions and getting into Navitimer money - it's a lot more than I'd pay but I guess the market decides.

I'm sure that we can agree that virtually all price guides, such as Richter's, tend to be low in their estimates.

I would add that while the popularity of the Heritage model certainly does play a role in the escalating prices of the original Super Oceans, much like the IWC Aquatimer and Longines Legend models, the broad popularity of the dive watch genre plays a role as well. Furthermore, I very rarely see these watches on the market, especially in excellent or better condition, so their rarity is also an important factor.

Are there any good sources of information on the simple automatic movements found in the non-chrono Super Oceans? The caliber is B125, and I've had a hard time finding anything at all on them. They may not be extraordinary, but I'd still be interested in any insights that other forum members might have.

To find movement info you'll need to identify what the underlying movement is. I'll take a look and see if I have details at home, but not sure that I do.
