I came across this Breitling here in Belgium.
Can anyone tell me more about the watch, model, year,...?
It is in non-working condition.

What would it be worth?
Does it look ok to all of you experts?
Would it be worth restoring?
I kind of like it you see...

Serial number is 1946, watch looks like any number of chronographs from that era.

I'll have to check the books for the model reference - 178 isn't the movement in this case.

Jeez Roff, I am amazed that you can date it so quickly.
I've tried accessing navitimer.net but couldn't get in.
Any other sites where I might find reliable info on models like these?

Well I hate to admit it, but I know quite a few of the ranges by now

I generally use my books for dating, though Navitimer.net is the only reliable online S/N source that I know of.

It's a slow site, but this is a great reference - though I haven't been through in detail to check accuracy - generally just use it when I don't have much info (and it doesn't have 178) - http://www.clubbreitlingisrael.co.il/24739/Model-By-Ref

OK, so I found a reference to 178 in Richter - very few details but it matches - "round case with square buttons".

I also found a picture of something very similar in Richter - only differences are that it's all arabic rather than arabic / baton and with a different font and the tachymetre and telemetre scales are slightly different.

Obviously there could be anything inside it, but externally it looks OK, but without much for comparison.

Value wise - these non Chronomat 40s Chronographs are only going to fetch around $1,000 in good order. Consider that this one isn't working, the crystal needs replacing, the crown is wrong and some of those marks could be on the face and you could put that into it just to get it working.

I thank you for your quick homework.
I'll have a look at that site you mention.
If it joins my collection I'll keep you posted.

I've had a couple of these ref 178's over the years. This one is well worn, has the wrong hands, and an unusual dial. I do think the dial is original though. Should look presentable with the correct blue steel hands and a new crystal.
