Post subject:  my 784 and marking question

Studying my watch when it arrived I came across a marking on the top left lug
I didn't pay too much attention to it until I saw it on another watch (Datora 785) as well

does someone know what this is or can be ?
I believe MichaelSummit has some experience with (hall)Marks , maybe he has an idea ?

thanks
-Rene

Interesting, wonder what that is, on gold ones too? I have seen a similar mark on the inner caseback of the gold ones in pics, see the 785 inner caseback pics in other thread.

I don't think this mark is damage , it seems to be done purposefully
the yellow/rose gold ones typically have a mark on the side of the case , and I am not sure what they look like
maybe Fred can show a hallmark on the case from his gold 784 ?

getting watch from safe, will be back w/ the info soon.

edit: nope, no additional hallmarks on mine, just the Helvetia inside caseback.

What's the leaf like mark(looks similar) on the inside of the caseback on the gold ones?(close to the 18k inscription)

Btw the watch looks great, received it from the seller or Craig?

San, not another Hallmark thread, please. As I wrote the Hallmark (inside or outside caseback, next to the "750") for 18k gold is the left-looking head of a woman called "Helvetia". After 1995 the woman is replaced by a Saint-Bernard dog, left looking too. Tons of threads about this including pics on this site.

No similarities whatsoever to the mark Rene is showing, might be a maker“s mark of a SS case manufacturer ?

My 784 had a similar marking on the lower right lug in about the same spot. I assumed it was a case defect since there was no other reason for it to be there.

Hmmmmmmm...that is a very interesting mark. It doesn't look like any hallmark I have seen from the time period, although it does appear to be a deliberate marking. I am afraid I may not be much help here. When getting into some older pocketwatches that I have, you will see some very strange hallmarks from places where there was no real standard, but I have not seen this particular mark before. It doesn't seem that this would be a manufacturing defect. Were these cases milled from solid blocks, or were they stamped out of sheets?

Prospecting in old threads today...I think I can help out here. This is an import mark from the Portuguese government, attesting to the fact that import duties have been paid on the watch, always found on the upper left lug.

You can just make it out in this photo of a Longines of mine...
