Post subject:  Question about bezel on 2114 Breitling Chrono-Matic

Hi.

New to the forum but longtime fan of 70´s Breitling chronos.
I have had a 2114 Chrono-Matic for many years but have some problems with the bezel.
When I bought he watch it was quite run down and had a glued on metalring instead of the black bezel that should be on the watch.
But I had it serviced and got a new crystal and also a revolving 12h bezel for it from Breitling in the original Breitling bag marked 2114 (this was many years ago when you still could get parts from them directly).
Problem is that my repairman could not get this bezel to fit on the watch and I have had it to a few guys and the same thing, no one could get it on and someone suggested that it was still missing a part tobe able to fit it.

Looking in old catalogs it says that the 2114 had a fixed bezel and the 2112 had a revolving one so I always thought that my watch should not have a revolving bezel but a fixed one and therefor this revolving bezel I have would not fit.
I also have been thinking that I might have gotten the wrong glass on the watch since mine is quite high with sharp edges and not as rounded as I have seen on other 2114 watches.
But then there was a thread here about a watch that caught my interest since it was a 2114 with a revolving 12h bezel and the higher, sharp edge crystal just like the one I have.
You can see it here: http://www.breitlingsource.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=27334
Not sure if that watch is original or put together from different parts though, anyone got the scoop on that?

So to sum it up, does anyone here know how these bezels should mount onto the watch and looking at my pictures below is there anything missing, have the case been modified, did I get the wrong glass for my watch, or something else?
Any thoughts or leads would be deeply appriciated, would love to get my watch complete again.

Regards.

Hmmm... not sure on this one either... bezel style does look correct, but i suspect you could be right... could be the wrong style of glass...

I would recommend that this be left to a professional... if you'd like you can contact chronodeco here... his work speaks for itself at very reasonable prices...

welcome to the source.

Thanks for the reply and tip about Chronodeco.
I have had it to several guys, both here in Sweden and in Zurich but no one says they know what to do since Breitling does not send out any parts anymore.
But I will pm Chronodeco and see what he says but if anyone else wants to chime in about, feel free to do so!

The 2214 and 2114 could come with either a fixed bezel or a rotating bezel. Craig (Chronodeco) just serviced the 2214 I have and installed a new crystal. The fixed bezel on it was glued on and he reglued it after the crystal replacement. Maybe the metal ring that was glued on your watch was supposed to be there because it's what mounts the fixed bezel.

Hi.

Thanks for those pics.
I do believe that the 2114 was a fixed ring only, that is why I was surpised to see that watch in the other thread.
The ring that was on the watch when I got it was just a plain metalring in the same size and shape as your fixed bezel.
I wonder if it would be possible to find a pulsameter, tachometer or decimal bezel?

Both versions of the 2114 were available, just received my 2114 (in quite nice condition) with a rotating bezel:

Fred! Is that the one that was on eBay.de? I thought about you when I saw it. Congratulations!

My 2114 has a rotating bezel, too.

Although the crystal on the OP's 2114 appears to be slightly tall, it might be because we are looking at it without the bezel attached. It might be correct for the watch. The crystal on my 2114 would look tall without the bezel.

To my knowledge, the only way the crystal would prevent the bezel from attaching is if the bezel inside diameter is smaller than the edge of the crystal. I think the watch repairers would have noticed this. It should be easy enough to measure. Looking at mine, it appears that the inside diameter of the rotating bezel just covers the metal portion of the case: It seems as though the crystal is straight up from where is sits in the case.

Here are shots of mine for comparison:

As Fred mentioned, I think the 2114 came with both rotating and fixed bezels. In fact, if anything, a rotating bezel was standard for the 2114. I have not yet seen a fixed-bezel 2114 but many 2112's have fixed bezels.

I always thought that the case for the 2112 and 2114 were the same. Perhaps yours has a 2112 case?

The only other answer I can think of is that possibly the original bezel was supposed to be fixed on your watch and the rotating bezel will not hold. Other than that, either Breitling mis-labeled the bezel or something is damaged that prevents the new one from being attached.

I do assume your watch repairers know how to install a bezel, yes..? :)

yes, got this together with a beautiful crono-matic 2130 (will post some detailed pics of this, a really nice case imho). had been looking for a 2114 in similar excellent condition as yours for a long time, many were on offer, but none of them acceptable. even got a decent package deal on the two.
