Someone got a nice price on the Chrono-Matic Superocean in this sale. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... fe=sidebar What interests me is the brown cord box. The seller states that it was sent to them with the watch, but if memory serves me correct all the NOS Breitling's that were sold out of that collection were without box's and papers, just trays of heads. So it's possible this box was married with the watch by the original seller or the new one. If I had just seen the box on its own I would have pegged it a lot earlier than this watch - say late 1950's early 1960's. I don't doubt that it's a Breitling box, but I wanted to ask if anyone has one like this and if they know a date for it. Is this an earlier box or is it contemporary to the watch? |

At that price I could have worn it happily - I felt slightly sick when the auction ended not to have thrown at least a bid in.

it will be in loving hands. boxwise: a very similar box was offered as a "original transOcean Chrono-Matic" box some time out of the UK. went crazily high and was then withdrawn, so I did not get it, but this would put this type of box at the correct period. |

We seem to have eerily similar taste in watches. It will definitely not be lonely. Will post pics of watch and box, when it arrives. Maybe we can open a box thread and try to list known vintage boxes and timeframes. Apparently Breitling used different packing for the US market (not Wakmann, but Breitling branded, black/red) at the time the Navis and Chronomats in Europe were in the "slim yellow" boxes ? Hope Paul will share some of his knowledge ? |

When it comes to boxes you have to take it all with a grain of salt. That box does look like a period Breitling box although I haven't seen it with a Chrono-matic before. My take on boxes is that after the watches spent a lot of time in the dealers showcase they were often sold with the wrong boxes by clerks that had no idea what they originally came in. Basically they got stuck in whatever was handy that had the Breitling name on it. I've seen Chrono-matics in the plain slim yellow cardboard boxes, Wakmann boxes, and just about everything in between but this box I've seen a couple of times and both times they were with Navitimers. I had a bid in on this one too but wasn't going to go higher than $2k. Nice catch! |

The reason I originally asked this was I have two Superocean boxes, which are branded for the Superocean. Attachment: SOBox_1.jpg Attachment: SOBox_2.jpg Attachment: SOBox_3.jpg This one I always had pegged for the first gen Superocean, it is too small for the later versions and just seems to me right for the late Fifties early Sixties. Attachment: SOBox_4.jpg Attachment: SOBox_5.jpg The classic yellow box is certainly for the mid-Sxities onwards Superoceans (2005) The first box I've never seen another one, branded Superocean, except for this one. Anyone else have the corded boxes? |

Mid-Sixties? Mid-Sixties is about right for those, got these boxes with Navitimers out of the US. No reason to call it "AOPA", I think, came with double-plane logo navis too. mine came with the yellow "certificat international" and the white "world service" booklets, so this doc set is incomplete. crazy price, though. I have a "slim yellow" box with a Navi from the same mid-60 period, from Germany, with NAVITIMER imprint, thus my theory of different boxes for different markets ? Will post pic of this tomorrow. This one came with docs above PLUS the original hang tag ! Beautiful SuperOcean boxes, Eitan, wow. My first "corded box" arrived today, nice, but pales in comparison to content. Trying to make up my mind which strap fits best (I do not like bracelets), like tan calf best, although the Tropic seems to fit nicely, too. Will post pics to democratize this decision. |
