I reported it in the hope eBay will do something - "Breitling didn't move to Geneva until 1952 so dial can't be right. Case and movement badly engraved." There has to be some responsibility on the buyer here - basic research would have flagged this and yet they are prepared to drop a grand without spending a couple of minutes checking.

Ebay does not seem to care about all the fake stuff that is being sold on its site - they are making big bucks off this crap. It will probably take a BIG money class action suit to get them to clean up their act. Not an easy legal issue so it will probably not happen. Craig

Seems like a perfect thread for me to ask if these are BS. Seems really cheap.

Not looking for an everyday watch, but something a little vintage and I love the old off-white coloring. Really want to snatch up the 1st one, but don't know the 1st thing about vintage watches and I don't want to end up with a fake. Any help would be great appreciated.

First and third one are from China... enough said...

The second one is actually quite nice... first generation chronomat. Some of the blurry pics are a bit iffy but from a quick observation it does look okay. Don't expect the final price to end at less than 1k... it'll go up.

As jlee said, you are comparing the incomparable here.

#1 and #3 are China Junk, these watches are mass produced and sold all the time, two to three per week, same watch, same junk, different sellers.
they go for about US$ 200, never much more, but almost always there are buyers for this POS; surprisingly enough, as you can find decent, authentic pieces of similar Breitlings at these price points, you just need a little patience and the know how where to ask if you have doubts about authenticity: here !

#2 is nice, although I am not sure if movement and case were joined at birth (do not see the import code which should be there by 1944), it will go quite high as jlee said.

Craig, just a short link to one of the worst "BS on ebay" examples

Boy that is bad. Reminds me of a quote from one of my favorite comedy albums of the 70s -
"he know not his hole from an ass on the ground"

That Chronomat is going to be a nice benchmark for an 'average' piece, as others have said, the others have never seen Switzerland.

haha. Thanks guys. Like I said, I know nothing about vintage watches, but it seemed too good to be true. Thankfully there's the internet and I was able to find some knowledgeable folks, though. Where is the best place to look for vintage watches that don't cost a fortune? I know $200 is low, but not looking to spend $5k, either.

eBay is the biggest marketplace, just post your finds here before committing and we'll set you straight.

Did Breitling even make a watch similiar to the one in the 1st link or is that just a made up watch with a name thrown on it? I like that plain old look.

They made some three hand dress watches. Get yourself a copy of Benno Richter's book, it's far from perfect but is one of the most comprehensive resources available - http://www.amazon.com/Breitling-History ... 842&sr=8-1

Thanks again. I have a feeling this is going to become an expensive hobby that I've stumbled upon.

It all starts here at breitlingsource.

It did for me... 8)

In terms of how much you're willing to spend, my opinion is that anywhere from 500 bucks to 1k should get you a nice starter piece.
