Mine says 1450 on the back. Is the back on mine wrong? Valjoux 7736, great watch, but I also think over-priced. I have seen them asking for close to $2000! I think I paid less than half for mine a few years ago.

It's good... but waaayyyyy overpriced... they only go for 400-700 bucks... very common... but for some reason some people try to overglorify them by charging way too much. |

I'm not so sure - I may be paranoid, but I don't like it. 1451 should be gold plated, this one is only 14 watches away - viewtopic.php?f=11&t=15109 The double caseback is weird, the Breitling engraving doesn't look clean and the bridge on the movement looks like it is inconsistent with the rest of the movement. The 1451 also looks like it has been added separate from the serial number. Either way, as jlee5050 says it's way overpriced, Old World sold their NOS ones for $1,095. |

Ref 1451 could be either gold tone or stainless, seen both. Sort of like a gold plated 806 or a stainless 806, same number. Nothing wrong with this one that I can see other than it's over priced. 20-25% premium for being nos. Have bought from this seller before and have always received quality items. |

It does lead one to believe the 1451 should be plated but I still have seen them both ways. Interestingly in the one for sale above it is described as "plated" in the description. Could be another of the 1970's mystery model anomolies? Don't know. Might have been put together at the end of the production run and they used what was available. Note the slight difference in the case design around the lugs of the pictured 1450. Old World Jewelers shows their plated version as being a ref 820 (Long Plaing) on the sticker on the back but you can't tell what's engraved on the back. Look at the ref 9313 Skin Diver chronograph pictured below. I have never ever seen one of those. |

Looks like that stainless steel 1451 is back up on eBay: $1,780. Based on the s/n shown, 1 418 583, it's from the 1973 production year: 1 406 567 - 1 426 969. BTW, I saw the gold 1451 shown on another forum, with s/n 1 418 597. (I own 2 stainless steel 1450s, both from 1975.) |

The numbering on these is quite inconsistent, as Paul said, this might be true to the troubled times of the mid 70s, maybe the cases were produced by different manufacturers ? The gold plated versions I have seen had been numbered 820.4 (has anyone ever peeled off those NOS "Long Plaing" stickers to see which ref. is underneath ?) or 1451, I have not seen the steel version of the 820, that should have the ref. no. 820.3 ? Breitling model numbering in the late 60,s through to the end seems rather quirky however, I think we should assume that in the absence of documentary evidence such as sales literature of the time, that any particular model no. would stick with a particular case. An 815 "long Playing" has a round case. It is virtually identical to an 810 "Toptime" but without "Toptime" on the dial. Why two models identical except for such a tiny detail? - . To me, a different cased "815" is a "bitsa" and therefore suspect. I personally would dismiss a non-round cased "815" without question. I bought my 815 new in 1975. It is a mid '74 serial. Over the years I have only ever seen round-cased 815's unitl now. Whether Willy Breitling sanctioned "bitsa" watches is anyones guess as we'll never know. I would rather assume he wouldn't have. Incidentally, wasn't the "Long Playing" branding exclusive to models with the 7736 movement? (the extended power reserve being a feature of this movement compared to earlier 178-engined models). |
