Did Breitling ever make a bumper automatic? There is one on the bay right now and I am trying to figure out if it is legit. http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-BREITLING-1 ... 0713402908 Ron |

That looks wrong to me - the caseback isn't too 'un Breitling like', but no serial or model numbers and the movement doesn't look like a Breitling one. The dial looks like a bad redial - look at the quality of 'Swiss'. |

. . . but maybe that's just avoidance behavior for me at work today. [Keep that to yourself, please.] For this one, it's almost as if they're not even trying. That is the standard Chinese-origin redial put on anything that looks close - usually marked with a 1956 serial number and model 2914 or 2915. In this instance, they've tried it on a bumper automatic. To me, this is consistent with my hunch that the Chinese forgeries are based on copies of watches in hand. In other words, they don't use any reference material, which is why we see the same serials and reference numbers. That contrasts with the Argentinian source (and I suspect it's just one shop spitting these out) that seems to use Richter to find a model reference number to match the watch for the forgery they're trying to pass off. I'm more disappointed that they've altered and defaced what must have been a pretty nice automatic winding watch. Shame on them. Breitling started making automatic, time-only watches with the Felsa 690 Bidynator, which was a mid-1940s innovation and a reliable movement for the day. I'm not aware of any Breitling bumpers, since there are no automatic wind watches in the 1946 catalog. |
